Xtreme Download Manager on Lubuntu

In previous article i have been reviewing one of the best download manager on lubuntu and ubuntu in general, which is 'uget', today i'm going to introduce another download manager, this one called xtreme download manager (XDM).

First of all, why this thing called 'xtreme', is it extremely fast or extremely slow? well let's find out, let's install xtreme download manager on lubuntu 16.04 and test it out to see how it performs.

Right now, xtreme download manager only available via third party repo, it is not listed under lubuntu/ubuntu repository, so to install xtreme download manager we need to add the PPA repo for xtreme download manager.

how to install xtreme download manager on lubuntu 16.04
  • add ppa repository for xtreme download manager
  • sudo add-apt-repository ppa:noobslab/apps

  • run apt-get update command
  • sudo apt-get update

  • install xtreme download manager
  • sudo apt-get install xdman

  • done!

Once installed you can find xtreme download manager from lubuntu start menu > Internet > XDM. The coolest thing about XDM is that it can download youtube videos as well, there are two options under the 'file' menu for downloading youtube, one is regular youtube download and the other is advanced youtube downloader, im not sure what's the different though.

There is also browser integration feature, which you will need to configure manually for google chrome, firefox and other browser. One thing i don't like about XDM is that it's force me to install and use open JDK 8, so if you have oracle JDK installed it will change into open JDK 8.

XDM is built using java, you can see it in the user interface, which in my opinion is not very attractive, ugly looking UI, but at least it is working.
